history

This was my first pair.  It all started when I was in high school and my friend and I accidentally bought the same pair of shoes.  We didn't want to be dressing like twins, so I painted on both our pairs to make them different.  After that, everyone wanted some.  I remember making it into the "new fads" page of our 2004-2005 year book.

Around my 50th pair, I started numbering the shoes next to my signature.. but then, I lost count somewhere around 200.  So I don't number them anymore.  If you ask me now {April 2011} how many I've painted .. I couldn't tell you, because I don't know.

In 2006 I was approached by Ben Hoffman at our summer camp reunion to start a business with him.  Now Your Kicks exists and is still growing.  We've sold (and are selling) shoes in:
Los Angeles, CA at Kitson, Beverly Hills, CA at Theodore Mens, Scottsdale, AZ at Electric Ladyland Clothing, Ketchum, ID at Burnsie's Boca, Miami Beach, FL at Vinn Boutique, and in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at Vibe Boutique.  This fall {2011} we'll have our first line selling on NeimanMarcus.com.  Maybe you've heard of Neiman's... :)

June 15, 2007 - Post on Shoeblog.com  "Custom-Painted Vans!"

In 2007 Magali Jay-Snyder asked me to paint shoes for her new custom shoe gallery, MILO, in San Diego.  That was fun.  I painted shoes in series of three, four, five pairs.  I love a design when the image is complete only when the shoes are together.  This time the image was only complete when all 6-10 shoes were arranged together.  When someone bought a pair, they knew it was completely unique and original, but somewhere out there somebody else is wearing another part of their overall design.  {Article}

September 3, 2008 - Post on the VANS blog.  "Anna Fleischer's Custom Vans Series"

At the end of 2009, VANS asked if I'd create some shoes for their stores.  They wanted to give their big city stores a makeover to look more like galleries.  I still paint for them sometimes.  Here's a {link} to Vans66's flicker account.
